  • Nonviolent Civil Disobedience: On June 7th, 1893, Gandhi experienced discrimination himself when a white man objected to Gandhi’s presence in the first-class railway compartment. Gandhi refused to move back and was thrown of the train. From that day, Gandhi wanted to change this and fought discrimination nonviolently.

  • Satyagraha: In 1906, Gandhi made his first mass civil-disobedience campaign. This he called Satyagraha, meaning truth and firmness. He did this to go fight for the rights of Indians after the incident he had encountered in South Africa. Finally, after many people having to go to jail, the South African government made a compromise with Gandhi and finally included recognition of Hindu marriages. Also, the abolition of poll tax for Indians.

  • Gandhi’s Death: On January 30, 1948, 78-year old Gandhi was assassinated by the Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse because he was upset with the tolerance for Muslims. But even after death, Gandhi continues to be a great inspiration for people all around the world and has made a big impact in rights for everyone. He did this all peacefully and finally has success!
