  • American Colonists Began to Govern Themselves
  • In the Virginia colony, each community shall elect two representatives.
  • Farther north, here in Plymouth, we shall form a majority-rule government.
  • American colonists came to America four hundred years ago in order to find a waterway to Asia and rich resources. When they arrived, they did not find what they were looking for, and they suffered, but more English men came, and things got better.
  • The Stamp Act
  • While English men were sailing to colonize America, the king of England stayed ruling. Although this is the 1600s, not the 1200s, and the king did not really have absolute power anymore. English people now have their own representatives in Parliament who made laws and stood up for people's rights, so they really did not need the king anymore.

  • Back in America, the colonists needed some kind of government to solve problems. In Virginia Colony, they decided to have representatives. In Plymouth, they decided to form a majority-rule government, where all men would vote.
  • Declaring Independence From Britain and the Birth of The United States of America
  • We did it, we won!
  • In the mid 1700s, Britain needed money after fighting two expensive wars. So they decided to tax the American colonists in 1765, by passing the Stamp Act. The colonists did not like this, so they decided to boycott buying British goods, but things got worse.
  • The British think they can tax us, just because they want to. This won't sit alright with us, we shall boycott!
  • After the Stamp Act was finally gone, the British decided to pass many acts such as the Declaratory Act, which basically made all laws passed in the American colonies useless, and the Townshend Revenue Act, which taxed things in the American colonies such as paint and glass. Also, the Quartering Act was also passed by the British, which allowed the British to force troops to live in certain colonist's house, and the Intolerable Acts were also passed. Moreover, the colonists were so angry about these acts, that during the Boston Tea Party, they decided to sneak on a British ship and throw away thousands of crates of tea into the Boston Harbor.
  • The colonists had enough of the British, so on July 4, 1776, the colonists decided to break ties with Britain by signing the Declaration of Independence. However, things were not that simple, and the colonists had to fight the British in the Revolutionary War, to gain their independence. After winning the war, The United States of America was born.
