- The French had just come off two wars, which caused a lot of financial problems. King Louis the 16th wanted to call a meeting of the estates general which comprised of 3 estates. The poorest one was annoyed that the vote was decided not based off head count but based off what each Estate voted. So of course, the two rich estates got what they wanted in terms of the taxes and voting policies. This caused the third estate to break away.
- The new name of the third estate when they broke off was called the national assembly. The people here moved into a tennis court in the fear of the King halting their discussions. The people here would make a pledge to France in which they would make a new constitution. The King was not happy about the things that took place. In 1791, the National Assembly finished a constitution.
- In 1789 the National Assembly heard rumors that the Royals were going to occupy the capital with military force. A bunch of Parisians wanted weaponry from a medieval prison known as the Bastille. They wanted to defend themselves from the King. The situation then granted much tension and shots were fired by the Bastille gaurds.
- In October 1789, a group of women from Paris made a march to the Palace of Versailles. This anger was directed towards both the King and Queen. Both created Big financial issues in France. The women wanted the King and Queen to go back to Paris. To which they did but as prisoners.
- The reign of terror saw Maximilien Robespierre kill 40,000. They used a new device know as the Guillotine which would chop people's head off. Anyone who shows sympathy for the former government was killed. Even the King and Queen were executed. Only until 1794 was this stopped when Robespierre was sent to death via Guillotine.
- Amidst all the chaos a young man from corsica took charge of France. His name was Napoleon Bonaparte. He would have many militaristic victories. He would even make reforms. He was even crowned Emperor.
