The Outsiders, Violence theme

- At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy is walking home from the movies when the Socs jump him. This supports the theme of violence because right off the bat the main character has something violent and bad happen to him.
- Use your head, Pony!!!
- On pages 44 and 45, after watching the movie at the movie theater, Cherry, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Two-Bit are in the front when Cherry and her friend's boyfriends drive up and hop out. They are about to fight when Cherry steps in. This supports the theme of violence because for no apparent reason a fight almost broke out with a broken bottle and more.
- On pages 55 and 56 while Johnny and Ponyboy are sitting by the fountain the two Socs from before come to hurt and maybe kill them. Bob tries to drown Ponyboy and in response to that Johnny kills Bob. This supports the theme of violence because someone got murdered and someone else almost got drowned.
- Darry and Pony fight a lot, eventually, Darry even slaps Ponyboy across the face. This supports the main idea of violence because even Pony's brother is being violent to him. Also, Pony doesn't fell close to Darry and is kind of scared of him.
- On page 12, Ponyboy says that Johnny's dad is always beating him up and that Johnny "would never have known what love and affection are."This supports the main idea of violence because Johnny doesn't want to be at his house because he will constantly get beaten and neglected. He experiences this with the Socs too.
- Most of the second half of the rising action leads up to this moment. On pages 143, 144, and 145 the big rumble between the Socs and greasers happens. This supports the main idea of violence because a fight, especially this one, is pretty violent and the fact that a lot of the book leads up to this fight shows that violence is the main theme of The Outsiders.
