  • "Are you a stranger?" Elisha said.
  • "Im not from here" the beggar said.
  • Elisha meets this unknown beggar at a "synagogue" that he prays at who has "eyes that are not from this world."
  • "Are you hungry." Elisha said. Elisha tries to help the beggar in any way possible
  • Elisha believes in Hassidic Literature that says a " beggar may be the Prophet Elijah" who offers eternal life to people who treat him well
  • this leads to Elisha to be inspired out of "fear"
  • While a beggar may not be the Prophet Elijah , it can be the "Angel of Death" who may " take the soul" of one who does him "wrong"
  • "No" the Beggar said. the beggar declines the generous offers from Elisha.
  • Elisha leaves the synagogue due to it being midnight and thats when the "dead rise up" and take anyone that wont be seen again.
  • Elisha proceeds to leave and go home and asks the beggar "come to my house , i can give you food and a bed to sleep."
  • The beggar says "I never sleep" but does offer to walk Elisha home.
  • The "echo of his words" affects Elisha and he says things "during night" that said be said "during the day"
  • As Elisha and the Beggar walk , the Beggar begins to speak "wisdom" about the night and why it is important.
  • The beggar asks " are you afraid?" "one mustn't be afraid of the dark" The beggar explains that "night' is more "intense" and "true."
  • Before the beggar leaves , he explains to Elisha how to tell night between day. " always look at the window ,if you see any face than you can be sure night has succeeded day."
  • As Elisha approaches his house , he offers the beggar to come inside but he said "no , he must be on his way."
  • Every since then , Elisha waited near his window looking for the "face." In the beginning he saw the "beggars face." After his fathers death he saw "his face" in the window. Elisha even saw total strangers in the window indicating the "success of night over day.
