  • Going to school is a right for ALL children. However, sometimes advocating for our children is absolutely necessary to obtain it. The biggest takeaway from the reading that I got was;Parents can and will do anything to support their children. We as teachers should give them the tools to do so!
  • Even if that meant moving out of the country. Today, Gina rides horses and pilots Anti-Bullying programs at her school. Proving that she absolutely can!
  • Gina was told she could not thrive in the enriching classrooms provided by BOCES. She was even prompted towards other options. Niki knew what her daughter needed and fought for it.
  • Listen to their concerns! They know what works and what does not! Trial and error is done for years before formal classroom settings.
  • As teachers, there are many ways that we can empower parents to advocate for their children to receive the best possible education. We must first understand that not all parents are equipped to handle all the curve balls life will throw at them on their own. With our teamwork and collaboration, success is possible.
  • Keep data on goals and needs. Share this with parents so that they can make informed decisions for their children!
  • Keep open communication! In order for progress to be seen, everyone has to be on the same page!
  • Gather resources for parents to build awareness and education on their child's needs. Make sure the resources are appropriate to the family. (Language, digital, paper, etc)
  • Amplify their voices in meetings! As a teacher I can use my credibility to support parental requests.
