  • Tāmaki Makaurau is the Māori name for Auckland. Long ago the people living on this land were fairy people named, Patupaiarehe. The Patupaiarehe didnt get along so well, to avoid fights, groups lived far apart. One of the iwi lived in the Waitakere forest on Aucklands west coast, and another in the Hunua forest in the south.
  • On moonless nights the young members of the iwi would play a game. They would sneak out of their house and race quietly over to the other iwi area. To show they had been there, the would take an item and present it to the others when they got back. One night Hui, the son of Waitakere, returned from a jaunt empty handed. The other young people made fun of him and teased him for not returning with anything. So the next night, the game was done again, but Hui did not return with the others.
  • Haha!
  • The great rangatira Waitakere found his son missing, he was angry and gathered a war party. But suddenly they saw 2 figures running towards them. It was Hui and Wairere, the daughter of Hunua (the other iwi)
  • When Hunua Patupaiarehe found his daughter missing he was enraged. So they gathered a war party and set off across the plain the deal with the problem. But Waitakere saw them coming. As the came the tohunga (high priest) of waitakere reached down onto the earth and took some of the hidden magic there. He mixed it with the dealiest spells and cast it at Hunua Patupaiarehe. Some warriors fell but others kept going. The tohunga cast another spell, this time it worked, one by one the Hunua Patupaiarehe fell to the ground, dead.
  • Then suddenly, the ground shaked. A chasm opened up in the earth and hung rocks were flung into the air as the wrath of Mataaho, the guardian of the Earths secret visited the Waitakere. He was furious with the tuhunga for taking the magic without permsisson. He awko his brother Puaumoko, atua of earthquakes and volcanos. Their combined anger open a hole in the earth. The tohunga tumbled into the hole as mataaho melted into the earth. The rest of the waitakere patupaiarehe fled for their lives, but could not escape. They hid rocks were thrown at them melting them.
  • Many years later, the two sat on a hill overlooking the Tamaki volcanic field. In disbelief Wairere said, It was not a dream. No answer Hui, and there is nobody left but us. Wairere and Hui have long since passes into the underworld, but the remains of their folly can still be seen in the volcanoes of Tamaki.
