  • Man vs God
  • "The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank him for" (Wiesel 33).
  • Man vs Man
  • "He threw himself on me like. wild beast, beating me in my chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again" (Wiesel 53).
  • Man vs Self
  • "The idea of dying, of ceasing to be, began to fascinate me. To no longer exist" (Wiesel 86).
  • This is an example of Man vs God because Elie is spending his time questioning what good God has done. Elie's is thinking if God is so good and so powerful, why is he going through such terrible things, why hasn't God done anything about it?
  • Man vs Society
  • "Softly, he read some ten numbers. We understood. These were the numbers from the selection" (Wiesel 74).
  • Idek is beating Elie because he was mad about something Elie had nothing to do with. He just happened to cross Idek's path at the wrong time, which resulted in Elie getting a beating.
  • Man vs Nature
  • "The icy wind whipped my face. I was constantly biting my lips so that they wouldn't freeze" (Wiesel 89).
  • This is an example of man vs man because Elie is fighting thoughts of dying. It's only him and his mid that is at conflict.
  • The selection is a process prisoners undergo to prove that they are, individually, strong enough to continue living in the camp. This makes it man vs society because each prisoner is being recognized individually.
  • Elie is fighting nature in this scene of the book. This harsh, cold wind is going up against his face and he's trying his best to keep himself the most protected from the cold, which he can't do a lot about.
