  • Mildred Sitting at Home Listening to TV & Seashells
  • Mildred Overdosed on Sleeping Pills
  • Mildred Expresses Her Emotions
  • "She's nothing to me; she shouldn't have had books. It was her responsibility, she should've thought of that. I hate her. She's got you going and the next thing you know we'll be out, no house, no job, nothing."(51)
  • Mildred is about 30 years old, so the same age as Montag. Guy described her as having abnormally pale skin by saying that she has a "snow" like face (13). To include her personality very much adheres to the status quo by following the rules, and staying silent and being a bystander.
  • Mildred Speeding
  • car is moving 100mph
  • Speed limit 55mph
  • When Mildred is at the hospital she is treated with a one eyed robot. The operator then flushes her blood in exchange for new blood. But when Mildred returns home she is unaware that she overdosed on sleeping pills as an attempt to suicide.
  • Question #1
  • Personally I felt very drawn to Mildred's character because I feel like the reader might infer that since she is the spouse to the main character that she would be very supportive, kind, and gentle. But she is very opposite from that because she has a shallowness and is very complex with her emotions. She is also very closed off from growing into being a better person. So that greatly affects her character because she has a very still/non growth mindset. Between me and Mildred we don't have a lot of similarities. And this is because she lives a fast life, she is cold and empty. In contrast, I am always very energetic, optimistic, and persevering. All in all, me and Mildred don't have similar characteristics.
  • As the reader can infer, Mildred is highly against the reading of books. In fact, she even stated that she hated the women that kept the books all along. This lets the audience deduce that she has definitely been influenced by the seashells and television for her to have those opinions. This demonstrates she is a very harsh and blunt person.
  • Question #2
  • Mildred sheds light on our society today because she falls victim to all of the stunts the government pulls on its citizens. For example, she always listens to her Seashells (radio) and also watches a lot of tv. To include, for the majority of her day she listens to her four televisions, talks to her "family", or has her Seashells in her ears all day. The effect of these things lead her to believing very biased news that mostly contains lots of propaganda. This turns her into a very ignorant and gullible person because she trusts the news so much. So her character will definitely be what some people will turn into in the future.
  • When Mildred starts to speed in the Beetle with Guy, his first reaction is to start screaming to slow down. When she goes over the speed limit, it shows that she fits the mold of the people in their society. This is because everyone in the society drives at 100mph daily.
  • Why did you feel drawn to complete your project on this character over the others? Are there any connections you can make between the character and your own life personally?
  • How might this character shed light on a current issue in society today? What might that issue be and why is this character a reflection of it?
