  • 1875
  • The U.S. Supreme Court has decided that the ruling for Minor v. Happersett is....
  • ...that women are citizens, BUT being citizen doesn't immediately result in the right to vote. So, only men can still vote, but no citizen can be violated of their right to vote based on their race.
  • 1890
  • Many states began to take advantage of the Minor v. Happersett ruling by implementing unfair literacy tests and requirements to vote that were specifically put in place to keep Black men from voting.
  • In 1890, Mississippi was one of the first to enact a constitution that put in place these unfair and violating procedures.
  • 2022
  • In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote! This meant that Minor v. Happersett was overruled.
  • It wasn't until 1966 though when the right to vote was protected as a fundamental right under the Fourteenth Amendment.
  • None of this would be possible though without Virginia Minor and Minor v. Happersett, which helped bring the topic of suffrage for all to a higher level through SCOTUS
