- After raiding the people of Cicones and having 72 men killed, and escaping the Lotus Eaters on the island of Djerba, Odysseus and his men arrive at the land of the Cyclopes. On this island, they feast on wine and goat cheese. After a couple of days, they make the decision to explore the island.
- "Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I'll make the crossing in my own ship, with my own company, and find out what the mainland natives are."
- This definitely isn't Ithaca.
- "We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield, to pasture his fat sheep...I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer-no pretty sight, it turned out my friends. We lit a fire, burnt an offering, and took some cheese..."
- "Strangers,' he said, 'who are you? And where from? What brings you here by sea ways- a fair traffic? Or are you wandering rogues, who cast your lives like dice, and ravage other folk by sea"
- "We are from Troy, Achaeans, blown off course by shifting gales on the great South Sea..."
