"A thousand sprites" and their actions are an exaggeration and shows the importance placed on Clarissa's beauty and the supposed gravity of the situation. This sprites, being supernatural beings, are personified as they "repair" to the lock of hair, "blow," and "twitch." It just adds to the fantastical and exaggerated tone. The theme that is emerging from this is showing satire on social triviality and creates a humorous aspect as well as thought provoking to the matter at hand.
