- Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams ran against each other for the presidency in this campaign.
- This election was important because Jackson was running against Adams for the second time. The political party they both formerly belonged to was split into two. The Democratic-Republican party became the Democrats and the National Republicans
- The campaign was bitter. Both sides made vicious personal attacks. Attacks were even made against Andrew Jackson's wife Rachel.
- There were NO new territories that were now eligible to vote, but there were changes in voters rights so there were many new voters in 1828 who had not been eligible to vote in 1824. Pennsylvania increased voters by 104,968. Ohio had an increase in voters by 81,025. Kentucky had an increase of 47,438. There were also 14 other states that had a substansial increase in voters. There were also 14 other states that had no popular vote at all in the 1824 election adding more than 300,000 voters.
- Andrew Jackson won because the people could relate to him. He also won because of expanded voting rights in the states as more people now had the right to vote.
- The National Republicans, Adams group, were still rich, aristocratic men, while the Democratic Party were the voters who were everyday common people.
