- Betsy and Amelia are arguing about their jobs and working conditions. They are both a single person and are having conflict. They are both against each other.
- Diana and her union group are trying to get better working conditions (hours, wages, etc.). She is fighting against the company (society) for better working conditions in the factory.
- At first, Lyddie thinks that her father is still coming back. But, when she is working at the tavern, She gives in to the thought that he is not. It took Lyddie at least 2 years to accept her father's unreturn. She didn't want to give up hope.
