  • The Firing At Fort Sumter occurred during the 1860s when confederate troops formed a ring around a federal outpost. Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter with heavy guns. This went on for about 34 hours. These first shots between the Union and Confederate Armies are what first started the Civil War.

  • About 35,000 Union troops marched in to fight with the Confederate forces. This happened right along a river known as Bull Run in Manassas, VA. The two unions rallied, which then resulted in the Confederates sending the Unions into a chaotic retreat. This marked the major battle of the Civil War and the victory of the Confederates.

  • The Battle of Antietam was fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle was the first major battle that took place on Northern soil. The Battle of Antietam was so intense that it resulted in about 23,000 casualties in one day. The battle was also known for being the bloodiest battle.

  • The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point for the entire war. Over 165,000 people fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, and about 58,000 of them died. The battle was considered a turning point due to the fact that this was the LAST available time for the South to invade the North. The battle began on July 1st, 1863, and ended on July 3rd, 1863.

  • The Siege of Vicksburg was a major union victory. The North managed to capture the Confederate Stronghold of Mississippi. Since the North captured their stronghold, they also gained control of the Mississippi river. This physically divided the North and South and cut off the South's ability to transport. This caused severe economic consequences in the South.
