  • The Ngai Tai tribe settled in Maraetai under the forest cover in Waitakere. They controlled land as far north as the Kaipara, all the way down to Takapuna. The Ngati Te Ata tribe was based south of Manakau and Ngati Paoa lived in Thames. The dominant power on the Tamaki land was Wai-o-Hua, they were tribes formed under Hua-O-Kaiwaka and linked to the Te Arawa tribe Nga Oho.
  • Early 18th centuary the Ngati Paoa made their way into the Hauraki gulf. 1740-1750 Ngati Whatua-O-Kaipara moved south killing Kiwi Tamaki and Cheif of Wai-O-Hua.
  • A period of caoutious peace was followed between Ngati Paoa and Ngapuhi tribes. Which made the Tamaki tribes in the north more vulnerable to attack. 1600-1750 Tamaki tribes terraced volcanic cones, building pa. across pieces of land they developed 200 0 hectares of kumara gardens
  • In 1750 the population had 10s of 1000s. It was pre-European New Zealand's most wealthy and populous area.
  • In 1821, the Ngapuhi leader wanted to avenge the previous defeats by the Tamki tribes so he launched a series of attacks. They killed hundreds and enslaved hundreds more
  • 1825, Ngapuhi attacked again. The target was Nga whatua, This battle is called the Te-Ika-ranganui, it was fought near Kaiwaka, even though Nga whatua tribe had enough people to fight against Ngapuhi, thier leader led them over the hill and into exile.
