  • My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.
  • Rising Action (1)
  • As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If any one has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me --
  • Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry.Come, let us go.

  • Montresor, wanting revenge on Fortunato for an insult, goes to the carnival to inform Fortunato of Amontillado that he bargained on located within the catacombs.
  • Climax
  • Ha! ha! ha! --he! he! he! --a very good joke, indeed --an excellent jest.We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo --he! he! he! --over our wine --he! he! he!
  • Fortunato exclaims with surprise about the Amontillado, wanting to taste some of the wine. Montresor, wanting to lure him, pretends to shrug it off by offering to invite Luchresi to the Amontillado instead because of Fortunato's sickness. Fortunato's pride causes him to insist that he'll be fine and that they should go.
  • Falling Action
  • "For the love of God, Montresor!
  • Montresor, who has warned Fortunato of the niter many times, successfully lures him into the catacombs. Fortunato continues to drink wine to ease his cough, which causes him to become more intoxicated and oblivious.
  • Resolutions
  • The cough's a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.
  • Once they reach the catacombs, Fortunato reaches into the wall to feel the niter. He ends up becoming astonished as one of his arms is captured by a chain. Fortunato, being in shock, laughs it off as a joke.
  • Yes... let us be gone.
  • The wine starts to ware off of Fortunato, and he starts realizing that this wasn't a joke to Montresor. Fortunato starts screaming at him to free him, "For the love of God!"
  • Yes, for the love of God!
  • Montresor finishes the job by placing down the last brick. Only the distant sound of the jingles from Fortunato was heard as Montresor left the catacombs, never to be caught of the murder.
