- Juan Ponce De Leon was born in 1474 in Santervás De Campos Spain.

- His parents were Pedro Ponce De Leon and Lenor De Figarova.

- Juan was not the only child in the house. He had four siblings; Juana,Marie,Isabel,and Luis.

- Once Juan grew up he joined Christopher Columbus on his second expedition.
- After he was done exploring with Christopher Columbus, he set out to find the Fountain of Youth and gold.
- For Spain!!!
- The Fountain of Youth was a spring that was supposed to make you younger and take away all your sicknesses, but it was not real.
- In 1506, Juan Ponce De Leon discovered a nearby island named Bourquin. When he was exploring the island he found lots of gold.

- After he left Bourquin he continued exploring. He was ordered by the King of Spain to explore and colonize others islands. In 1508, he returned to Bourquin and renamed it Puerto Rico.
- Juan Ponce De Leon was the Governor of Puerto Rico for 2 years until the King replaced him with Columbus' son.

- After he was done serving as the Governor of Puerto Rico he sailed again, but this time he sailed north.
- Hey I should start a farming colony!!
- In late March of 1513, he landed on the east coast of Florida near present day St. Augustine and claimed the land for Spain!
- He named this place La Florida, which means "Place of Flowers."

- Juan Ponce De Leon ended up in the Charlotte Harbor area in Florida where he met the Calusa Indians. They were an unfriendly tribe.
- Juan and his team all fled back to their ships and sailed back to Puerto Rico.
- YIKES! I'm outta here!
- After they left Charlotte Harbor they circled around the island and thought they found new land. But it was the same place where the mean Calusa Indians lived.
- OMG can it be NEW LAND?!?!?!
- Their plan was to set up a farming colony in the area, but when they went to get water the Calusa Indians ambushed them.
- Juan Ponce De Leon was hit in the thigh with an arrow and was wounded. The result of his wound caused his death and he died in July of 1521 at the age of 47.
- Today he is recognized and remembered as a brave conquistador that explored many parts of Florida.
