  • Take care of yourself. Love, Martha
  • In the chapter, The Things They Carried, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carries letters from Martha. He sexualizes her by imagining things and he sees her as an innocent woman that he is in love with, but he convinces himself he loves her too. Martha represents love and denial.
  • I'm still in love with her....
  • In the chapter, Love, Lieutenant Cross thought about Martha because he saw the picture of her playing volleyball. He thought she was cold and emotionless, but he was still in love even though she didn't feel the same. He wanted to do things most guys would do, but he respected her.
  • Remember this photo?
  • I love you so much
  • Ummm.........
  • In the chapter, Spin, memories and stories were made up that soldiers had. One guy went out with a nurse to get whatever he wants and then left her after even though she was in love. Some men would use women for their own benefits to get away from the war life.
  • I don't know if I should go to war or not... if I don't people will think I'm a coward or weak if I don't go...
  • In the chapter, On The Rainy River, Tim O'Brien was thinking about his decision on if he should go to the war or not after being drafted. He was thinking about how people would see him as or the way they feel about him if he didn't go. Men are expected to be the brave ones that aren't scared of anything so he is worried that people will view him a certain way if he chose to not go.
  • In the chapters, Enemies and Friends, Lee Strunk and Dave Jensen are soldiers that got into a fight. They later resolved the conflict and became friends that trusted each other. This shows the way some men act by fighting, but it shows the forgiveness and friendship between two guys.
  • I'm sorry for breaking your nose.
  • It's ok, I forgive you.
  • He was my best friend... I can't believe he passed away.
  • In the chapter, How to Tell a True War Story, Rat's best friend passed away and he was really sad about it. Men are allowed to show emotions since it is a normal human behavior and they shouldn't be viewed as weak. A true story should have meaning and feelings because that is how life is.
  • Why are you scared?
  • I'm so embarrassed. I need to figure out a way to get out of this.
  • In the chapter, Dentist, Curt Lemon was afraid of dentists because of bad experiences. He felt embarrassed since the guys joked around about him since he was freaking out. This shows that men judge other men for being scared. In order to show he is strong, he had the dentist pull out a good tooth.
  • In the chapter, Sweetheart of The Song Tra Bong, women are seen as pure and innocent but if one thing changes, they lose their innocence. However, women were also shown as brave and not fearful. Mary Anne represents the loss of innocence due to war.
  • Mary Anne and Green Beret Mary Anne
  • Please don't say anything.
  • I can't even recognize her. Her hair is short and she isn't herself.
  • Mark, that is Mary Anne. She might not be the same person anymore and pure and gentle but she is still a girl.
  • I miss her so much...
  • In the chapter, Stockings, Henry Dobbins would sleep with his girlfriend's pantyhose and smell it to make him feel like he is at home. Even after they broke up, he would still smell it. He seemed obsessive and his girlfriend would have probably felt weird about it. At the same time, it allowed him to have an escape from the troubles of war.
  • In the chapter, Churches, it doesn't really talk much about gender roles. It mainly shows the interactions between American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians.
