  • Frederick Douglass was a slave since birth. For the first time in his life Douglass was a field hand for Mr. Covey, a slave owner. He worked beyond his personal abilities 6 days a week almost all day long. While working in the fields, being beaten was a routine for Frederick Douglass. It was impossible to escape Covey, “the snake”. Douglass was somewhat unmanageable in the beginning, but Covey broke him. One day Douglass collapses at work because he was too exhausted and was whipped and kicked by Covey repeatedly to get back to work. Covey whipped him hard in the back of his head, letting the blood run and leaving Douglass to his own fate.
  • Frederick Douglass escaped the torture and ran into the cold, dark, and lonely woods. He decided to stay with another slave, Sandy Jenkins. Sandy told him to go back to Covey, but he also gave him a magic root that was supposed to protect him from being beaten by anybody. Frederick took the root. When he returned back to the plantation he did not get violently beaten by Master Covey.
  • Covey, “the snake”, had a plan up his sleeve to trick Frederick Douglass in a well thought situation to punish him forrunning away. While Douglass was working, Covey snuck up behind him and tried to tie his feet together with a rope, but failed. Frederick Douglass immediately fought back. They were kicking, punching, and rolling all over the ground. Finally Covey stopped fighting and gave up. Frederick Douglass won the fight and claimed his inner freedom.
