  • The first step in mitosis is prophase. In prophase, the chromosomes start to condense and centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell. Using the analogy of kids picking teams for kickball, we see all of the kids group up in the middle to play and two team captains step out to pick teams. The group of kids represent the chromosomes and the captains represent the centrioles.
  • In metaphase, the chromosomes and their centromeres line up in the middle of the cell to attach to the mitotic spindle. In the picture, the kids, or chromosomes, line up in the middle of the field so that they can be picked for teams.
  • In anaphase, the sister chromatids are split apart and pulled to opposite ends of the cell by the kinetochore microtubules shortening. On the field, the kids are each picked by a captain and go over to take his side after being picked.
  • During telophase and cytokinesis, a membrane forms around the separate chromosomes, and the cell splits into two separate, identical daughter cells that contain the same amount of chromosomes as the mother cell. In the kickball game, the captains have picked their teams and there are now two teams with the same amount of players.
