Süžeeskeem Tekst

  • We even had chores to do and often built coffins for our friends who died of sicknesses and disease that were introduced to us by the Europeans.
  • John died from something called the flu.
  • When it was finally time to come home we were not the same.
  • Some of us were angry and turned aggressive. Some of us were too scared to speak. Some of us turned to drugs and alcohol to forget. Some of us even lost our mother tongue. Home felt strange. I assumed that's what they wanted.
  • No. They don't want me to speak.
  • LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
  • And then there were some who did not even make it home. Either they did not make it out alive or no longer wanted to live.
  • That's terrible. Sounds like a nightmare!
  • How was this allowed? Did your mom send you knowing all of that stuff happens?
  • My mother had no choice. Attending those schools was mandatory by law for us Natives. Those schools were meant to "civilize" us and make us more Western or more like them so we can "assimilate". If we did not go, we would be forcefully taken, our family would be fined, and our tribe would no longer receive food or other goods that we needed from the government. Sometimes it would even get violent.
