Sadie wants to download assets to use in her video game, but first she has to make sure they are free to use. In this short story we teach kids and teens how to responsibly use someone else's work online. Art theft is all too common on the internet, and many people do it by mistake. By checking the terms of use and crediting the original author of the work, you can demonstrate good citizenship on the internet and avoid legal trouble. Here are some resources that will help you understand copyright law: Are you legally using images? https://www.copyrightlaws.com/legally-using-images/ How to find free assets online: https://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/media-assets/ How you can protect your work online: https://blog.academyart.edu/art-school-tips-protect-work-online/

  • I think I'll download and use these assets in my game! It's way better than anything I could make...
  • Are you downloading someone else's work online?
  • How'd you get in here..?
  • Y'know taking what isn't yours is a crime, right? Checkin' the terms of use first should be common knowledge by now...
  • A crime?
  • Kids these days, they think anything on the internet is free to use! Don't know a thing 'bout copyright or askin' permission... just take what they see without even crediting the original artist! What has the world come to?
  • Copyright?
  • Actually the asset pack I'm planning to use is licensed under Creative Commons, and the music I downloaded is Public Domain. I made sure to credit the artists aswell.
  • Then have a great day!
  • See ya.
