Hey, Im Ava, I will be your server for tonight, what would you like?
The House Salad for me
Ava is on her way to work upset and in a bad mood because she had to put her dog Marlee down last week because she had cancer and it is still bothering her.
Scene 4: Rude Customer
About time the food finally came, give it here!
I'm sorry for the wait, its very busy tonight.
Just let it go, don't let it bother you
Not getting a tip from me
Ava arrived at the restaurant and is preparing for her shift by putting herself in a better mood and trying to stay positive so she can receive extra tips. She knows that she has to be positive and cheery to receive tips because that is what her boss told her when she got hired.
Scene 5: Role-Playing
Cash.
How would you two like to pay
Anytime, have a good night
Thank you
Ava begins to serve her first table of the evening, she still isn't in a good mood but she portrays that she is cheery to please the customers. This situation can be defined as Emotion Labour, which is when someone has to manage their emotions as a part of their job for which they get paid.
Scene 6: After Work
I am so tired, cant wait to be home
The restaurant was busy so Ava had to serve more tables than she usually does, this began to make her feel stressed. Then once she got to the adult couples table the man made a rude comment to her but she just brushed it off. This is called emotion management which means that she controlled her emotions and reacted appropriately in this situation.
After the couple ate their food, Ava collected their plates and then went back to the table to give them their bill. When she asked how they would like to pay the man answered "cash" in a stern voice so Ava collected the cash and remained polite through the whole conversation. The woman ended up leaving a tip. This is an example of role-playing because she listened to orders from her boss.
After Ava clocked out of work at the end of the night she started driving home. When she was driving home she felt drained because she had to fake her emotions due to emotion labour and emotion management. She was finally able to go back home after a rough day.
