- Mussolini attempted to build a stronger army for Italy by invading Ethiopia, as one of Africa's three independent countries. Ethiopia had survived the first attempt that Mussolini had sent at them. He was mad and upset that the first attack didn't succeed so he sent a second, more violent attack. Italy had sent planes, tanks, guns, and poisonous attacks. Ethiopia had turned to the League of Nations in search for support and aid but did not receive any. Mussolini and Hitler had later formed an alliance.

- Hitler was being aggressive and making moves to add land to Germany. Britain and France did not like this so they had come up with an agreement. They would form and alliance and agree to never attack each other. On August 23, 1929, they had signed a nonaggression pact.
- Nonaggression Pact
- On June 14, the Germans had taken over Paris but French leaders had officially surrendered on June 22. The northern part of Paris was kept by the Germans while the southern part was owned by Marshall Philippe Petain.
- Invasion and Fall of France
- Charles de Gaulle set up a government-in-exile in London and focused his main goal to regaining Paris. France would eventually become free of German rule.
- Battle of Britain
- With the fall of France, Great Britain was the last hope and did not plan to ever surrender. Hitler had planned on attacking the air force first, then the land soldiers. The war had started in the summer of 1940. Britain's airforce was severely outnumbered but had technological advantage. They had radars and a German code machine making named Enigma. Due to the technical advantage that Britain had, Germany had to rethink their battle strategy and ultimately withdraw from the battle. In result of this, the allies and the rest of the world had realized that Hitler's attacks could be blocked.
- Hitler had decided to attack his ally, the Soviet Union as early as the summer of 1940. Hitler had wanted to put bases in the Balkan countries of southeastern Europe. Hitler had used force to get Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary on his side. He had also attempted to get Greece and Yugoslavia but they resisted. This required Hitler to battle them, in which the battles both ended fairly quickly.
