- In the town of Vladimir lived a young merchant named Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov.He lived with his wife and children. His wife told him about a dream she had before he leftto the Nizhny Fair.
- On his way to the fair, he met a merchant. They had some tea together, and then went to bed in adjoining rooms.
- Two soldiers stopped him and asked questions about the merchant he has stayed the night with because he was found dead. The officers searched his bags and found a bloody knife.
