- Frederick Douglass mistress was teaching how to read. Like the alphabet, sounds, etc. Also, started teaching him how to read. Then, after a while stoped teaching him for a reason of discrimination. After, not being able to learn he started to teach himself with newspapers.

- Since his mistress was not able to teach, he was still able to get and eat the bread, so, when he was out on the streets he would see the little urchins hungry. He would offer them a piece in return for knowledge on how to read. The kids took this offer because they were hungry and at least they knew something on how to read. He knew two kids that helped to read the most but, is not able to say.

- Fredrick was able to get his hands on a book. That was based on a slave who escaped 3 times and risked his life to just to be free. After, he read this book he starting think a lot about him being free and how it would different. The thought never left his head after that.
