- The soldiers faced yet another problem when they were scarce on supplies such as food. The soldiers were most likely malnourished and/or deprived of nutrients. The soldiers commonly ate fire cake, a combination of flour and water. Firecake does not have enough necessary nutrients to support a person's body, especially when they are soldiers preparing for war.
- Baron Fredrick von Steuben was a former Prussian General who had been directed to Washington's troops by Benjamin Franklin. Von Steuben chose 100 men and he instructed them in drill, maneuver, and simplified manual of arms
