  • WE WANT EQUALITY
  • FREEDOM! FREEDOM!
  • The fundamental reason for the Haitian Revolution was because people were dissatisfied with their treatment. Slaves desired liberation, but free blacks and whites desired equal treatment in politics and other areas.
  • Slaves were brutally abused, and motivated by the French Revolution and its "Declaration of Rights," the slaves of Haiti's sugar and coffee colony on Saint Domingue revolted.
  • Blacks revolted for their freedom on June 25, 1789. They assassinated and burnt down their white masters' homes. Toussaint L'Ouverture became the commander of the overall insurrection, and they were successful under his direction.
  • On October 5, 1801, L'Ouverture issued the Haitian Declaration of Independence, which abolished slavery. It offered all inhabitants equality and citizenship. He also declared himself ruler for life, which enraged many people.
  • On October 10, 1801, the haitians revolted against L'Ouverture, accusing him of exploiting them for the benefit of France. They chastised him for appointing himself as ruler for life.
  • On October 20, 1802, L'Ouverture was betrayed by France and conquered. He was incarcerated and died in France in 1803.
