- It was in the early 1800's about the early winter and Mr. White and his son Herbert were sitting down and playing chess while Mrs. White prepared dinner. Suddenly they heard the front gate open and close and then heard big footsteps trudging to the door." There he is." said Herbert. Mr. White welcomed in a burly man with light eyes and a red face. It was Sergeant Major Morris.

- Herbert got stuck in the machinery.
- Mr. White poured Major Morris a glass of whiskey as they all sat by the fire and the visitor talked about is adventures and all the places he traveled and experience war, plague, and culture. Morris mentioned a monkeys paw and Mr. White leaned in more closely to listen. he said to through it in the fire but Mr. White couldn't. Morris said that whoever wields it receives three wishes.

- Sergeant Morris said his goodbyes and left the house"You should wish for me to have four arms so I can do all the chores faster!" said Mrs.White." Should wish for 20 pounds to pay off everything." said Herbert. " so Mr. White wished for two hundred pounds to pay off his house.

- When Herbert went off to work Mr. and Mrs. White were sitting at home when Mrs. White saw a man pacing outside of their followed by a knock at the door. The visitor told the couple that he was from Maw and Meggins. He said that Herbert became stuck in the machinery and had passed away. " But Maw and Meggins send it's condolences and we will offer you compensation." said the messenger. Mr. and Mrs. White accepted 200 pounds for the death of their son.

- A week later Mr. and Mrs. White were sleeping when Mr. White heard quiet crying. It was Mrs. White weeping by the window so he told her to come back to bed and he drifted back to sleep. All of a sudden she screamed out monkeys paw and woke up Mr.White. Mr. White got the monkey's paw and the old lady wished her son alive again. Suddenly they heard a knock at the door and Mrs White sprang out of bed and ran downstairs with Mr. White chasing after her.
- Mrs. White ran down the stairs and tried to open the door "I can't reach it!" she said. Mr. White was on the floor felling around for the paw Mrs. White started sliding a chair to the door. Mr. White found found the paw and whispered a phrase. All of a sudden the knocking stopped and the door flung open to reveal nothing outside of the door.
