  • King Henry the II and Thomas Becket became very close friends. Henry the II gave Thomas Becket the role as the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162. He chose Becket because King Henry the II believed that he would help with his disagreements.
  • As Becket was the Archbishop, he did not listen to King Henry the II, making King Henry the II very angry. Later, King Henry the II got the Archbishop of York to crown his son when he knew he was supposed to be arch bishop of Canterbury.
  • King Henry the II thought that Thomas Becket would support him but Becket never listened and conflicted with him. After all the arguments, Thomas Becket got so fed up with King Henry the II so Becket decided to escape to France during 1164 to 1169

  • In 1169, Thomas Becket returned to Canterbury, England and was met by groups of cheering crowds. After King Henry the II finding out he raged and shouted. Four of King Henry the II knights overheard his rage and left to Canterbury Cathedral on the 29th of December 1170.
  • The knights went to the Cathedral and murdered Thomas Becket as they thought that they were doing orders for King Henry the II. Beckets death surprised everyone around Europe. King Henry the II stated that he never meant for Thomas Becket to be killed.
  • King Henry the II was horrified and sorrowful. Everyone pressured him to apologies. King Henry the II felt guilty and accountable that he walked up barefoot to the Canterbury Cathedral and gave permission to get flogged by the monks for a punishment.
