- The things that Jude is compared to on the daily basis"She was blueblack. No so black she looked purple black as coffee asphalt outer space black as the beginning and end of the world "(Bennet 94). Jude lives in a town where only the lightest people are accepted she is constantly bullied and talked about because she is the only dark skinned person in the town. Shes seen as an outsider compared to the other children and people in town.

- Kennedy is mad about a game so says something out of anger"You know what she said to Cindy? Well the girls were playing some games and Kennedy was losing so she said, I don't want to play with a ni****"(Bennet 233). Loretta gets upset about what Kennedy says to Cindy and how disrespectful it was of her to say that to her but she dosen't blame Kennedy she know she heard it from somewhere else so she ineventaible distances herself from Stella
- Effects on others
- Kennedy says something that is offensive to Jude"That sly smile or the way she'd said your men so casually as if it didn't include her"(Bennett 282). Kennedy says something to Jude about how shes knows that people don't usually go for people like her she gets angry because she talks about her like she isn't part black like her. Jude gets upset about what Kennedy says so she exposes everything that shes learned about her that her mom hid from her
