  • Hello. My name is Yeh-Shen. I live with my step-mother and step-sister since my parents died. They are mean to me, give me hard chores, and do not give me enough food. My only true friend is my golden fish that I caught and raised. He soon grew to an enormous size.
  • Thank you for staying by my side, loyal friend!
  • I don't' know how, but eventually, step-mother heard of my fish, went down to where it lived, and killed it for our dinner. I cried and cried. After what felt like hours, a man appeared and told me a spirit in the fish bones could grant me things, but to not wish for too much.
  • Hello. I have come to tell you of a powerful spirit, able to grant wishes, inside of your fish's bones.
  • My poor friend!
  • Soon enough, it was time for our annual Spring Celebration, where all the girls and guys would go to find spouses. Of course, my step-mother did not allow me to go, for she thought someone saw me, they would rather be with me than with step-sister. I was left at home to prevent theft, as step-mother said. Of course I was upset, so I went to the fish bones.
  • Don't even think of coming to the Festival! Only me and your sister are going.
  • Hmph!
  • Upset by my step-mother, I went to talk with the spirit. I asked if it could grant me some fancy clothes to go to the Festival. All in a second, I was dressed in a beautiful blue gown and my hair was up in a fancy do with a hairpin. But the most important part was the shoes made of gold that sat on my feet. They felt like nothing, even though it looked as if they were made of solid gold.
  • Oh my gosh! I can go to the Festival now!
  • After I had been dressed in the elegant clothes, I snuck out, careful to not let my neighbors see me, and went to the Spring Festival. I was having an amazing time until I heard step-sister's voice say, ''Mother, doesn't that girl over there look like Yeh-Shen?'' Upon hearing this, I turned and ran from the ball. In my rush, one of my golden shoes fell off and I my beautiful clothes turned into rags once again.
  • Mother, doesn't that girl over there look like Yeh-Shen?
  • After running home, my bones were silent. Once step-sister and step-mother returned, I heard them saying that whoever's foot could fit in the shoe found would be married by the King. Of course, when it got dark, I snuck out once more to retrieve the shoe for the bones. As I was grabing the shoe and putting it back on, my clothes turned back into the dress, and the King, who had been hiding, came out and said that would be his Queen.
  • You shall become the next Queen of these lands!
  • Really? I can't believe this would happen to me!
