  • The Monsters are Due on Maple Street Theme: Blame, fear, and suspicion often lead to fights and conflict.
  • In the short story, "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, a main theme of the story is that blame, fear, and suspicion often lead to fights and conflict. A piece of this text to support this statement is when the character's initial confusion turns into fear. This can be shown by a line spoken by the character Tommy, starting on page five, "'Whoever was in that thing that came over. I don't think they want us to leave here.'" The second line stirs up feelings of fear and unwelcoming among the residents of Maple Street. Also, on page eight, a character called Charlie says, "'He was always and oddball. Him and his whole family.'" This shows how quick he was to accuse to take suspicion away from himself. Lastly, on page eleven when the character Steve says to another character, Les Goodman, "'That's exactly what it is-some kind of madness.'" These reasons from a short story show how blaming others, being fearful, or being suspicious will almost always lead to conflict. When desperate, we lose trust, and hate or fear replaces it. If bias was not a rule of the human mind, the world would be a better place.
