  • What is an Endangered Species?
  • An endangered species is any species that is at risk of extinction due to a sudden decline in its population. An animal officially becomes endangered once its population experiences a 50-70% decline in the span of 10 years or when only 2500 adult individuals remain.
  • How do Species Become Endangered?
  • Species can become endangered as a result of human activities such as poaching, deforestation, and habitat pollution as well as natural causes such as disease and natural disasters.
  • What is an Example of an Endangered Species?
  • Sadly, there's a wide variety of endangered species in every livable habitat across the globe. Endangered species include tigers, orangutans, and rhinos. as well as plants we haven't even discovered yet!
  • Hello there! I'm a California condor. I'm an endangered species in your state. I am dying out due to habitat loss and lead poisoning from bullets.
  • Why Should I Care?
  • All animals are part of a complex ecosystem that needs each species in order for the entire web to thrive. Eliminating one species from the equation can throw off the entire balance of the ecosystem with disastrous results. Disturbing the balance not only harms other wildlife within the community but it also affects humans. Without condors, for example, who are nature's clean-up crew, our beautiful deserts would become disease-ridden graveyards!
  • How Have Humans Helped Endangered Species?
  • Zoos and conservational programs raise funds to breed and reintroduce animals back into the wild. Groups advocate to ban or restrict practices that harm wildlife. For example, a number of organizations like the LA Zoo and the San Diego Zoo have put together conservation programs in order to breed condors and repopulate their habitat. They have managed to grow the condor population from 22 individual in 1982 to over 500 today.
  • I appreciate the help! It's now time for me to spread my wings again!
  • We All Need to do Our Part!
  • Human beings are part of a vast, delicate, and complex ecosystem that requires the right balance for it to thrive. We need to take action to reduce human impact on the planet in order to protect the animals, the environment, and ourselves.
