  • In Chapter 1 of To Kill A Mockingbird, we meet the characters Scout, Jem, Atticus, Calpurnia, and Dill. Atticus is Jem and Scout's father and he is an attorney. Calpurnia is the Finch's cook and housekeeper and Dill is a boy from Mississippi. The story takes place in Maycomb County and this summer, Jem and Scout meet a boy named Dill that is staying the summer with his aunt next door. The three of them play games all summer long, which included investigating the Radley household and enticing Boo Radley to come outside. Boo Radley is a Maycomb county legend and no-one has seen him outside in years, which is what made Scout, Dill, and Jem curious.

  • In chapter 2, Dill leaves Maycomb and returns to Mississippi and Scout starts first grade. Scout's new teacher Miss Caroline was taken aback by Scout's ability to read and told Scout to tell her father not to teach her anymore. Later in Scout's first day, Miss Caroline asked the class to bring out their lunches and she saw that Walter Cunningham didn't have lunch. Miss Caroline offered Walter a quarter but he refused. Scout then explained to her that he's a Cunningham which means that he doesn't have the money to pay her back.

  • In Chapter 3, Scout finds Walter in the playground and rubs his nose in the dirt because he made Scout start off on the wrong foot, Jem finds her doing that and invites Walter over to their house for lunch. At lunch, Walter poured syrup on his food generously and Scout stopped him and contradicted him, so Cal called him into the kitchen and scolded her for doing that. Back to school, Miss Caroline learns about Burris and how some kids only come to school for one day. After school, Scout asks Atticus if she can stay home but Atticus says no.

  • In chapter 4, Scout explains how the school year is passing by slowly for her and she is being released from school 30 minutes earlier than Scout, so she has to run by the Radley house all by herself. One day when going by the Radley house, Scout finds a hole in a tree in the Radley yard that they suspect is someone's hiding place. On the last day of school, they find coins in the tree and decide to keep them. Dill arrives for the summer and they start playing a game called Boo Radley and Scout doesn't like the game, so she spends more time in the treehouse by herself.
  • Chapter 9
  • In chapter 5, Scout begins to spend more time with Miss Maudie, their neighbor as a result of Jem and Dill excluding Scout from their plans. Scout asks Miss Maudie if she thinks that Boo Radley is still alive and she says that Boo was very polite and friendly as a child and she thinks that if he isn't crazy as a boy then he is now. Dill and Jem decide to invite Boo Radley for ice cream by sticking a note through their window with a fishing pole. Atticus finds them doing this and says to stop tormenting the man.
  • Chapter 10
  • In chapter 6, Jem and Dill decide to look through an open shutter into the Radley house. Scout says that it is a bad idea but joins them. They go to the house and see a shadow of a man in the back window, they run away and hear a shotgun blast behind them. Jem's pants get stuck on the fence and join the rest of the neighborhood at the front of the house. When they are asked where Jem's pants are they said they were playing strip poker. Later at night, Jem snuck out and retrieved his pants.
  • In chapter 7, Scout starts second grade and is excited that she is now able to walk home with Jem. Jem tells Scout that he found the pants sewn up when he went to get his pants that night. Later, Jem and Scout leave a note in the tree but found out a couple of days later that the hole had been cemented shut. When asking about this, Mr. Radley said that he cemented it because the tree is dying, but when they ask Atticus, he says the tree isn't dying.
  • In chapter 8, Maycomb county has the worst winter in many years. Jem and Scout build a snowman with dirt and covered it in snow. They dress the snowman with Miss Maudie's sunhat and put hedge clippers in its hand. Later, in the night, Scout was awoken by Atticus and went outside to see Miss Maudie's house burning down. In that night, someone put a blanket on Scout and they figure out that Boo Radley put it on her. The next day, Miss Maudie tells Jem and Scout that she always wanted a smaller house and a bigger garden anyway.
  • In chapter 9, Scout starts a fight with Cecil Jacobs after he says that "Scout's dad defends negros". Later, Uncle Jack comes to stay with them at Christmas time. On Christmas day, like every other year, Atticus takes Uncle Jack, Jem, and Scout to Finch's landing where Jem and Scout receive air rifles. After, Francis says to Scout that Atticus is a "Nigger lover", which made Scout angry, so Scout beat him up and cursed him out. Uncle Jack punishes Scout without hearing her side of the story and later when he hears it, he becomes mad at Francis but promises not to tell Atticus.
  • In chapter 10, Scout explains how Atticus is much older than the parents of her classmates and instead of drinking beer and fishing. he reads and Atticus tells Jem not to shoot at Mockingbirds because "It is a sin to kill a mockingbird". Later, when a mad dog starts walking down the street, Atticus is handed a rifle and shoots the mad dog. Jem and Scout were amazed by this and Miss Maudie told them that when Atticus was young, he has the best shot in Maycomb county.
