  • Life in the Colonies 1600's-1740's
  • Government in the Colonies
  • Boston Massacre
  • Life in the colonial times was very simple. Many people lived on farms with a lot of land and grew crops and kept animals. Other people lived in the cities where there was access to more imported goods.
  • Stamp Act
  • This is outrageous! The King now says it is illegal to own a document or even a simple newspaper without one of these nonsense stamps!
  • The colonies were mostly self-governing and the government had little to no interference from the British monarchy. People were happy with how the government was controlled as this was the way that it had always been.
  • Boston Tea Party
  • Ah yes! Maybe King George will finally learn to not tax us without representation!
  • The colonists recorded many acts of tyranny which interfered with both their natural rights and their rights as Englishmen. One of the more famous events being the Boston Massacre; A large group of colonists were protesting, yelling, and throwing snowballs at the redcoats (British soldiers) The redcoats got alarmed and shot and killed 5 colonists. This act of violence caused many colonists to become even more angry.
  • Declaration of Independence
  • Declaration of IndependenceWe hold these truths to be self evident...
  • When the British imposed a tax which enforced newspapers, legal documents, playing cards, etc. to have a special stamp. If these items were not marked by the stamp, they were illegally owned. The colonists were outraged that they were being taxed without their consent and colonist representation.
  • Stamp Tax
  • When the British imposed the tea tax on the colonies which enforced them to only buy tea imported from Britain. The colonists, in order to protest against the tax, dumped thousands of pounds worth of tea into the Atlantic ocean.
  • After many years of trying to make the British stop interfering in their government, the colonists (after much deliberation) decided that they wanted independence. They wanted to fully break all of their ties with Britain. Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of this declaration and the congress worked together to edit it. When they were finally happy with the words that they had chosen, they signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
