  • From 1600 to 1750 the Tamaki tribes terraced the volcanic cones, building p (settlements behind protective palisades). Across the isthmus they developed 2000 hectares of kumara gardens.
  • From the early 1700s,  the Ngati Paoa people edges their way into the Hauraki Gulf as far north as Mahurangi.
  • Between 1740 and 1750, Ngati Whatua-o-Kaipara moved south, invading the isthmus and killing kiwi Tamaki, paramount chief of Wai-o-Hua. They then took his last pa at mangere, securing their dominance of the isthmus via intermarrying with descendants of the Wai-o-Hua
  • At the peak of prosperity in 1750, the population numbered tens of thousands. It was pre-European New Zealand's most wealthy and populous area.
  • In 1821, the Ngapuhi leader Hongu Hika Launched series of attacks on the region. He stormed two of Ngati Paoa's fortified settlements, killing hundreds and enslaving hundreds more with using 2000 men and 1000 muskets. Hika repeated this slaughter at Te Totara, the Ngati Mary fortress near Thames
  • IN 1825, Ngapuhi attacked again. The target was Ngati Whatua, with the battle being fought near Kaiwaka. Although Ngati Whatua had 1000 warriors, Ngapuhi still crushed their old foe with 500 warriors armed with muskets. The chief of the Ngati Whatua - Apihai Te Kawau - Abandoned the isthmus and took his people into exile.
