- Faustus is no longer fulfilled by the studies of physics, law, medicine, logic and desires to learn magic so he can be able to grasp a higher power. Consequently he calls upon Wagner to bring him Valdus and Cornelius who are experienced in the dark arts.

Then chanting in Latin, he invokes the powers of heaven and hell, calling upon the devils of Hades, the Holy Trinity, the spirits of fire, air, water, and Earth, Beelzebub, and Demogorgon (a demon). He commands thatMephistopheles appear.
