Dad, we need water for all our daily activities. But where does it come from and how come it never runs out?
Well, if we aren't careful, we can run out of water, son. We get water from many sources - oceans, rivers, underground.....
Haha! yes!
....And RAIN!!!
Ha! No, son. Rain is the result of a process called the water cycle.
But where does rain come from? Does it just magically fall from the sky?
Evaporation
Condensation
Surface runoff
Precipitation
Yes it is. Which is why we must use water carefully and conserve water. If we misuse it, we could face floods or droughts.
That is interesting, dad! This means water is one of the most precious natural resources we have!
That's a great observation! Water exhibits a queer characteristic - when it cools from 4 to 0 degrees, it expands and becomes less dense. This is called anomalous expansion of water.
Dad! Look at the ice in my glass! Isn't ice a solid form of water? Then how come it floats in my glass and doesn't sink?
Water is also purified and made potable before we use it. If not, we will fall sick with waterborne diseases.
Absolutely right, Akhil!
And once in reaches our home, we take the water from the taps and boil it and filter it before consumption!
Look at the way we pollute water! It is full of sewage, industrial and society's waste.
Yes dad, you are right. I have learnt some valuable lessons today. Water is precious and we must conserve it and keep it free of pollutants!

On a hot and humid evening, Akhil and his father were resting on the park bench after a few rounds of exercise. Akhil was thirsty and he grabbed some water to quench his thirst.
Akhil's father laughed and responded.
As he felt droplets of water gently fall on his head, Akhil piped in -
Father and son quickly took shelter in a nearby cafe. Akhil still had some questions, though.
Father went on to patiently explain how water evaporates from the oceans and seas and changes to vapour. This vapour then cools down into water droplets in clouds. And finally fall on Earth.
Father went onto explain simple things like turning off the tap while brushing, using a bucket for bathing and fixing water leakages can help conserve water for the future. He also explained how rainwater can be collected and used later by rainwater harvesting.
Soon, the ice cold drinks they ordered arrived. Akhil observed his glass and noticed something strange!
Father also explained how water is purified by sedimentation, filteration, chlorination, ozonisation before it is distributed to our homes through pipes. And then, Akhil remembered something!
The rain had stopped. Akhil and his dad walked home. As they passed the river Akhil saw the river littered and dirty.
