- Lynn and Katie's father taught Lynn how to play chess and Lynn won her first game. Katie believes that Lynn is a genius and believes that all the good things Lynn says will come true.

- Lynn and Katie's mother is rubbing their father's feet. Katie feels safe because her father loves her mother a lot. Katie's feeling safe shows how she is innocent and does not know the bad things that can happen even if her parents love each other.

- Lynn and Katie are riding in the truck with their uncle on the trip from Iowa to Georgia. Katie does not want to move and does not understand why they have to go. This shows that she is innocent because she does not understand the importance of her father's job and the difficulty of finding a job.

- When Katie starts school, none of the other kids play with her. They ask her about her ethnicity and her hair and the teacher makes fun of her dress.
- On their family's trip, they stop at a motel for the night, and the lady at the front desk assumes they're Indian or Mexican and either way says they have to take a room n the back for an extra cost.
- People stare at Katie's family in a restaurant. White people sit in the front and a sign says "Colored in Back." They didn't know where to sit so they ordered their food to go.
