- The bridge...
- Flashback...
- Peyton Farquhar has been placed at the edge of a railroad bridge with a noose around his neck. He is surrounded by executioners, a captain, a sergeant, and a sentinel at each end of the bridge. The thought of this being the end was ludicrous in his eyes.
- Attention, company! Shoulder arms! Ready! Aim! Fire!
- As they removed plans from beneath him he had closed his eyes to think of his wife and children. Oh how he yearned to get back to them. He starts to hear this loud tick that seems to slow down creating anticipation. He realizes its his watch. Then he felt the tug of his body falling but the rope broke and he was dumped into the water below. Struggling to reach the surface.
- What a relief!
- Flashback: One evening a gray-clad soldier rode up to Farquhar and his wife house gate. Asked for them a cup of water that the wife gladly gave and discussed the repairs on the railroad. However, little did they know this would be what got Farquhar in his predicament and that this was actually a Federal scout.
- His body started attempting to escape from the bonds they were put in so he could reach the surface. After he did he was in incredible pain from his neck to his brain. As he put all his will power into swimming away from the bridge shots were fired. Relentless amount of shots were called as he dived and swam farther away.
- He crawled to the shore after being able to get far away enough into the woods. The relief took over and he laid there for a short time until he heard the cannon being used in effort to get him. He got up and started wandering the forest.
- Wandering the forest, Farquhar had started feeling famished and was fatigued. His feet were so sore to the point he could not feel the ground below him. He persisted through it all just to try and reach his beloved family. Though the forest to be never ending and he started to sleep as he walked.
