  • Prospero then uses his magic to put Miranda to sleep and calls to his spirit servant Ariel. Ariel describes how he created the storm and that the ship is now ‘Safely in harbour’ and everyone on board is safe. Prospero is pleased but tells Ariel ‘there’s more work’
  • Prospero: Know thus far forth. By accident most strange, bountiful Fortune (Now my dear lady) hath mine enemies Brought to this shore; and by my prescience I find my zenith...
  • Miranda: Heavens thank you for't! And now I pray you ,sir For still 'tis beating in my mind your reason For raising this sea storm?
  • Ariel: All hail, great master! Grave sir ,hail! I come To answer thy best pleasure; be't to fly, to swim, to dive into the fire, to ride On curled clouds. To thy strong bidding task Ariel and all his quality.
  • Trinculo and he tries to hide under his cloak. Trinculo sees Caliban hiding and wonders whether he’s ‘a man or a fish?’ He decides ‘this is no fish, but an islander, that hath lately suffered by a thunderbolt’ and ‘creeps under his gabardine?’ for shelter from the storm.
  • Caliban: Farewell master; farewell, farewell!
  • Trinculo: howling monster! A drunken monster!
  • ... Ferdinand: No, noble mistress, 'tis fresh morning with me When you are by at night. I do beseech you, Chiefly that I might set it in my payers, What is your name.
  • Prospero has set Ferdinand the task of removing ‘Some thousand of these logs and pile them up’. Ferdinand says he would hate this work but thinking of Miranda ‘makes my labours pleasures’. She tries to help him and Prospero, who watches them secretly, is delighted they are in love.
  • Prospero: Por worm, thou art infected! This visitation shows it.
