  • Oh very nice it is one of my favourite topics in history did you know about theProblems created by the British Land Revenue Policies
  • Hey dad do you know today i learned about the revenue system made by british in my history class
  • Ok so let me tell you the land revenue policies implemented by the British affected the agricultural sector. When the farmers were unable to pay tax in the form of money before the deadline, they had to take a loan from moneylenders at a high rate of interest
  • The loans were obtained by mortgaging agricultural land. The agricultural land of the farmers, who could not pay back the loan and interest, was seized by the money lenders.
  • Oh no i do not but i would love to know about it.It sounds very interesting
  • Yeah revenue was collected then toothe land was a major source of revenue for the kings and emperors from ancient times. But the ownership pattern of land had witnessed changes over centuries.
  • During Kingship, the land was divided into Jagirs, these were alloted to jagirdars, these jagirdars split the land they got and allocated to sub-ordinate Zamindars. they made peasants cultivate the land, in return collected part of their revenue as tax.
  • Oh that's very bad of the british they shouldn't have done that. so what was it back then, when british weren't there did they still pay land revenue?
  • Under the Mahalwari system, the land revenue was collected from the farmers by the village headmen on behalf of the whole village. Under the Ryotwari system, the land revenue was paid by the farmers directly to the state. The Zamindari system was started by the Imperialist East India Company in 1793.
  • So do you know about the types of revenues that were there
  • Oh! Really
  • Yes I know thatThere are three major systems of land revenue collection which existed in India. They were – Zamindari, Ryotwari and Mahalwari.
  • Zamindari System was introduced by Cornwallis in 1793 through the Permanent Settlement Act. It was introduced in the provinces of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Varanasi. Also known as Permanent Settlement System. Zamindars were recognized as the owner of the lands. Zamindars were given the rights to collect the rent from the peasants
