  • A catalyst of the American Revolution was that England had let the colonies have control over their governing but then took away all of their control. The reason was that England was in debt from the Seven Years' War and they needed the money.
  • "No Taxation Without Representation"
  • The colonists did not want to be taxed more than the British just to be watched by the British while they did all the work. They also had no say in what taxes were passed by parliament.

  • The colonies receive their first direct tax by way of the Stamp Act in March of 1765. This tax affected them largely because of the constant use of paper in their day-to-day lives. 
  • Boycotting Britain's Goods

  • At this point in the colonists were coming together to fight the Stamp Act. Their previous attempts as individuals had been ignored so they formed the Stamp Act Congress in October of 1765.
  • The Congress did not seem to work because only 9 out of the 13 colonies showed the ones who did could not agree on how to deal with the problem. Eventually, the efforts of individual colonists got the Stamp Act repealed.
  • To rebel, the colonists refused to buy British goods and pressured others into doing the same. Britain eventually repealed the Stamp Act but the peace did not last.
