Ahh what an incredible view. This is the luckiest cat on the planet to wake up to such an incredible view.
He can't even imagine the stress I'm under. I am the backbone of this household!
The Departure
Chicka-dee-dee. Fly to the big bird, you little birds!
T are you checking for runways? Are you keeping an eye on the fuel supply?
First Stop: The Beach
Are you serious? We flew all the way here and you refuse to go in the water? What a pussy.
B, I'm sorry. But you have to understand, it's my nature.
Our story begins with a man named B. B sells insurance. He doesn't go door to door; instead he sells tiny bits of insurance to strangers over the internet. B has a sidekick named T. T has never understood insurance: he is a hunter and he lives dangerously. B and T couldn't be more different, but also couldn't be better friends.
Next: The Mountains
Pop quiz T: show me a Prusik Knot! A Prusik! A Prusik! We've been over this a dozen times. It's like you weren't even listening.
One day, insurance sales were bad and B was stressed. T was also stressed: he hadn't hunted in six months. He was enjoying life in B's minimalist castle, but he had a deepening fear that he was becoming a 'kept cat'. A pit emerged in his stomach that morning and it wouldn't go away. That evening, B and T decided they needed adventure. And so they set out in their tiny craft.
And Then: Space
Their first stop was the beach. What a mistake. B hated the beach, but T had long dreamed of surfing in the open waves and feeling the sand between his toes. Unfortunately his instinctual fear of water prevented him - try as he did - from going in the water. As fast as B could tell him "I told you so," they were off in their tiny craft.
The Moon
T, I know you want to plant a flag, but I'm really worried about re-entry. We have to time it just right and you've been no help so far with navigation!
B loved the mountains and assumed T would too. He had planned knot tying drills, ski lessons, and a few modest ascents. But T would have none of it. He had the heart of an explorer, but the body of a middle aged web developer. What he really desired, he told B was "to fly like a bird, to be weightless".
It would seem that way, wouldn't it.
And so they agreed to embark on their biggest expedition yet: a trip to the moon. B did most (all) of the navigation, and T took photos. As earth - a sapphire and aquamarine gem - became smaller and smaller, they wondered what could have ever been stressful down there on beautiful earth; whether they'd make it back; and if they did, whether they'd ever be the same.
The two adventurers spend a day and a night alone in the craft. And finally, they landed. Overtaken by the magnitude of his mission, T pushed B out of the way and spacewalked to the nearest crater where he planted his flag: TurboTheCat - First Cat in Space.
I have nine lives, so I'm not so worried...you'll figure it out
Heading Home
Finally Home
T, I know you want to plant a flag, but I'm really worried about re-entry. We have to time it just right and you've been no help so far with navigation!
Tell the paparazzi no questions until my jetlag as worn off.
But In their Dreams...
First Cat In Space. That he was and would forever be. The pit in his stomach that had plagued him during those months in the castle had vanished. He had a purpose and a legacy. He could return home a hero and a conquerer. And so back to their tiny, crowded island they flew with clear heads and full hearts.
They splashed down in the East River and caught the ferry home. T was forever a changed cat. He had seen another world and was no longer caught up in this one's trevails. B was reinvigorated. The mission hadn't changed him the way it had T, but he was happy to be home. Happy to return to his minimalist castle and to selling the insurance this world so badly needed.
They'd been home for weeks and told people all about the beach and the mountains. But not about the moon. There was something about telling the story that seemed like it would lessen it. For B and T returned there nearly ever night. As they slept, they discovered new planets and planted their flags. They were forever adventurers. Forever a part of the stars.
