- Tommy Hubbard came running into the Glenmore to let Mattie know that her family was sick and the animals hadn't been fed. Cook let her go off to care for her poor sick family. She was so worried that she followed and asked someone for a ride to take her straight to her home. It was a quick drive and once she reached her home, she was devastated.#160;
- That's good but he said I killed her 
- Pa he is back
- Once Mattie had gone to see the animals and try to stop the chaos going on the farm, she went inside and saw her family who were sick lying in bed.#160; Their skin looked pale and there was a mess everywhere, Mattie then found Pa and he was a terrible mess. Abby told her she would help but Mattie insisted she would go rest. She did work by making tea and cleaning the house. Shen then took Pa to take a bath.
- What's wrong Tommy?
- I'm leaving
- Mattie had taken her pa to take a bath and she saw scars and scratches all over his back but she also covered his private area because she believed it shouldn't be seen. Her pa was shivering in the water but she had to get him all cleaned up from the vomit. 
- MATTIE
- Once Mattie took her Pa back to his bedroom, he started to speak French and he started crying. Mattie was so confused because her Pa started saying why Lawton left and what the argument was about. He said that Lawton had told him that he killed their Ma with hard labor and he didn't want to be next. Pa had so much emotion within this chapter. 
- When Mattie was in the kitchen, she saw something outside the window and there was Tommy Hubbard he was crying and punching the cow, Baldwin. Baldwin's eye was punched and he was crying but the same thing with Tommy, his face had been punched. Mattie asked him what happened but he ran away. 
- Royal had come to see what had happened and Mattie was telling him how she got the family taken care of. Royal then proceeded to let Mattie know that the cow Daisy had to be killed because she was utterly ill. Mattie told them no but they had to and her Pa was speaking nonsense, her sister yelled at Mattie but she just collapsed on the floor.
