- In this chapter cole finds himself outside the bay facing towards an island, about a mile away he quickly makes his way towards land, freezing and hurt. He begins to think about the circle justice meetings and has a flashback. He remembers everyone Who was there, there was his mother, his father, his lawyer, peter driscal, etc. He then remembers when peter walked in the room which is a kid Cole beat up he was walking with a limp and was terrified of Cole when he entered. During the meeting they pass around a feather to say their concerns and thoughts about Cole, They then get to peter and as he talking is slow and He looks super nervous. Although peter is like this Cole doesn’t feel sorry one bit. He blames Peter for snitching on him.
- When Cole was gone from the bay, he began to swim harder to get away As the waves washed over his head. He then stops to rest and his limbs feel wooden and stiff. He then looked up to notice that he was still at the mouth of the bay, He thought it was an illusion. He then realizes that he’s been swimming against the tide. He begins to swim to another island but fails to, So he knows he has to get back on land because if he doesn’t he could drown. As he makes his way onto shore, He’s freezing and exhausted. But he doesn’t have any shelter cause he burned it down. Cole tried to stand but couldn’t. He tries to stand again but his legs collapse under him and then he sees the spirit bear staring at him. The bear then walks away and Cole says that he’ll kill it if he sees the bear again. Cole then starts to think about the people in his life who treated him badly and thinks to himself that he hated them. Cole starts to think back to one of the circle meetings where his father starts to say things that aren’t true, He says that he always wanted the best for Cole, when Cole hears this he snaps and says that’s bull and says all the things his father does wrong.
- As Cole struggled to pull up his clothes He couldn’t stop thinking about the circle justice meeting. When he exposed his father. At the hearing circle, Cole and his father yell at each other. Cole is calling his father a liar. As this is happening Cole asks his mom to back him up but she quickly passes the feather on. They later get to Peter's mom who is crying and saying that Cole caused a lot of damage to her son and that he should go to jail. Then when it’s Peter's turn he speaks under his breath and says someone should smash Cole’s head into a sidewalk so he knows what it would feel like. Then everyone was shocked. Cole did that to Peter so he wants payback. It then goes back to Cole on the island and he’s wandering around the island because he doesn’t know what to do next so he’s thinking. He becomes hungry but has nothing to eat. He just sits around for a few hours. He then remembers when Garvey explained circle justice to his parents and Peter's parents saying that it was a good idea. He also remembers Garvey saying that it wasn’t more of punishment but more of a way to reevaluate and heal. Also, Garvey at the end of the chapter says to Cole that banishment is better than going to jail.
