  • In 1815, William Buckland, English paleontologist and geologist, set out to explore the English Countryside and went to Stonesfield Slate
  • Based on my studies of fossil and bone structures, these appear to be a jawbone, limbs, and a tooth. But, what creature could these belong to?
  • These bones are hollow, meaning that the creature must be carnivorous. They also seem to be bigger than usual animal bones.
  • After more careful analysis of the fossils...
  • These fossils must belong to some sort of ancient, extinct carnivorous reptile!
  • While on an excursion, I came across Stonesfield slate, and found a jawbone, limbs, and a tooth of some sort of creature
  • Back at Corpus Christi College, where he was not only a student but later became a reader and professor in geology, he announced his new discovery
  • After careful analysis, I found that the bones belonged to a carnivorious reptile. My guess is that these are the bones of a large extinct lizard. I will name this new species I have discovered "The Megalosaurus"
  • 9 years later, in 1824, Buckland published “Notice on the Megalosaurus” or “Great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield” and later became known for writing the first full account on the Megalosaurus. His new discovery led to many other findings such as the establishment of the Age of the Reptiles.
