The author creates tension by saying things like on page 29"A sudden hush fell on the crowd as Mr. Summers cleared his throat and looked at the list." Not telling the audience what they are gathering up for. She still gives us no info on this yearly event. She keeps the readers on a hook wanting to know what this event is.

  • Everyone in the town is throwing rocks at Tessie . This event leaves the audience in surprise. the author says on page 34 "It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her". This meaning everyone was throwing rocks at her. No matter how much they liked her everyone had to throw rocks, even her own son. But if a person in the town did not like her they would throw bigger rocks like Mrs. Delacroix.
  • Tessie dies from the rocks being thrown at her. They do this yearly event to try to maintain the population at their town. It is a very cruel but fair way to control the population even though its really crazy. No matter how old or young you were you had to participate in this event from old man Warner to little kids. On page 34 it also states Old Man Warner was saying, "Come on, come on, everyone." Showing that everyone has to participate .
